Obsidian Sun: A Poetry Compilation of Fiery Blackness

Obsidian Sun: A Poetry Compilation of Fiery Blackness

Obsidian Sun is Black brilliance, burden, beauty, and bravery captured in verse. These poems confront the ways society distorts Blackness - how our light is too often dimmed by a skewed lens - yet they also reveal the radiance that has always existed. Light and shadow shape one another, and in that balance, our truth is born.

This collection is more than poetry; it is a series of anthems for self-love, self-protection, and self-care. Each piece serves as a promise to ourselves and a seed of possibility for future generations. These poems don't simply speak-they affirm, uplift, and remind us of who we have always been.

Rooted in truth, protection, grounding, and divination, Obsidian Sun honors the duality of our existence. Obsidian, forged in heat, represents clarity and defense. The sun, the giver of life, represents endurance and illumination. Together, they reflect how we thrive under both the harshest rays and the cloudiest days. We remain. We rise. We create.

We are a constellation of Black stars-collective, luminous, and eternal. Obsidian Sun is not just me, you, him, her, or them... it is all of us, standing in our shadow and our shine, praying to past suns as we blaze new paths of our own.

Ball and a Dream: Making Your Next Bold Move Count

Ball and a Dream: Making Your Next Bold Move Count

God gives second chances and we can't be afraid to take the opportunities we're given in life. That's the message a former collegiate basketball star, Dr. Tamica Smith Jones, presents in her memoir, A Ball and Dream.

Circumstances, choices and missteps along the way seem poised to make life difficult and threaten to derail dreams, but instead Jones finds that when one path closes another opportunity presents itself.

"You must believe that you can overcome any situation or circumstance. When you fall, never stay down," Jones writes about the obstacles she encountered and the turns her life took while pursuing her ambitions. "Get back up, and go in a different direction. It is also important that although stressed, distressed and sometimes depressed, you acknowledge that 'greater is He that is within me then he that is in the world' " (1 John 4:4).

Her parents' divorce when she was young leads to the blessing of a blended family. Losing a college scholarship forces her to find work to pay for her education - a job that leads to her meeting her future husband.

Jones writes about her life's high points - success on the basketball court, marriage, the birth of her son - as well as the lows she goes through - lashing out at a fellow student and having to change schools as a result, and later, bouts with unemployment and struggles in her career. Jones' course in life is anything but a smooth journey, but she has faith that God is guiding her.

God gives second chances, Jones writes, and she advises readers not to shy away from pursuing new opportunities so long as the effort is made to stay in His will.

She writes: "Throughout my life, I have learned that there are two wills of God, His permissive will and His perfect will. I think that with permissive will, He allows us to make choices that are based on our own command. These choices and experiences could prove to turn out bad, but God allows it. However, I think that opens the doors of opportunity at every step. Even if things look like they are not going well, I like to say 'it is working for your good' (Romans 8:28)."

A Ball and a Dream will be available in paperback online through Amazon, Barnes and Noble and wherever books are sold.

"[Jones'] frankness about the choices and consequences she made along the journey frees one to move in faith not fear," said Bishop Ruth W. Smith of Light of the World, about A Ball and a Dream. "God proves through Dr. Smith Jones' story that He is the God of another chance. This book is a must read for anyone who has a vision and need to be inspired to keep going."

  • Book cover for Matrescence: On Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Motherhood

Matrescence: On Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Motherhood

Matrescence: On Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Motherhood

From the acclaimed author of Losing Eden ("Powerful, beautifully written"--Anthony Doerr) an important, moving, passionate and passionately written inquiry--personal and scientific--into what happens--mentally, spiritually, physically, during the process of becoming a mother, from pregnancy and childbirth to early motherhood and what this profound process tells us about the way we live now.

"I read your book, or more accurately devoured it! Loved it . . . It will be the new classic text in Motherhood Studies." -Andrea O'Reilly, founder, Motherhood Studies

"The best book I've ever read about motherhood. Matrescence is essential reading, bloody and alive, roaring and ready to change conversations." -Jude Rogers, The Observer (UK)

In this important and ground-breaking, deeply personal investigation, Jones writes of the emerging concept of "matrescence" - the wholeness of becoming a mother.
Drawing on her own experiences of twice becoming a mother, as well as exploring the latest research in the fields of neuroscience and evolutionary biology; psychoanalysis and existential therapy; sociology, economics and ecology, Jones writes of the physical and emotional changes in the maternal mind, body, and spirit and shows us how these changes are far more profound, wild, and enduring than have been previously explored or written about.
Part memoir, part scientific and health reporting, part social critique, ecological philosophy, eco-feminism and nature writing, Matrescence is a kind of whodunnit, ferreting out with the most nuanced, searing and honest observations, why mothers throughout this heightened transition are at a breaking point, and what the institution of intensive, isolated motherhood can tell us about our still-dominant social and cultural myths.

"Jones seems to come as close as it's possible to describing this indescribable moment in a woman's life." -Joanna Pocock, The Spectator (UK)

    Behind the Badge

First responders run toward things the rest of us run away from.

What makes a person want to become a first responder? Who would become a cop after her brother died in the line of duty? What guy rejects joining a lucrative family business to become a local firefighter instead? Why would a Mexican American combat veteran choose to work as a medic for the Border Patrol, knowing the stigma he'd face?

One thing all these people have in common is that none of them wants to be called a hero.

First responders keep going to work every day, even though that means confronting the worst situ-ations imaginable. Their inspiring and unique stories are almost always overlooked when it comes to patri-otic recognition of service and sacrifice.

As in his New York Times bestselling book Unbroken Bonds of Battle, retired Marine Johnny Joey Jones didn't have to look further than his closest family and friends to find frontline defenders--some he's known since childhood, some he served with, and others have become friends and mentors. With vivid storytelling, Jones brings to life dramatic res-cues, heart-wrenching losses, and awe-inspiring acts of courage. He delves deep into what drives these brave men and women, offering an intimate look at their personal and professional lives.

Behind the Badge will leave you moved, inspired, and reminded of the true meaning of heroism--because these first responders are home-town heroes at heart.

Bending Toward Justice: The Birmingham Church Bombing That Changed the Course of Civil Rights

The story of the decades-long fight to bring justice to the victims of the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, culminating in Sen. Doug Jones' prosecution of the last living bombers.

On September 15, 1963, the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama was bombed. The blast killed four young girls and injured twenty-two others. The FBI suspected four particularly radical Ku Klux Klan members. Yet due to reluctant witnesses, a lack of physical evidence, and pervasive racial prejudice the case was closed without any indictments.

But as Martin Luther King, Jr. famously expressed it, "the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." Years later, Alabama Attorney General William Baxley reopened the case, ultimately convicting one of the bombers in 1977. Another suspect passed away in 1994, and US Attorney Doug Jones tried and convicted the final two in 2001 and 2002, representing the correction of an outrageous miscarriage of justice nearly forty years in the making. Jones himself went on to win election as Alabama's first Democratic Senator since 1992 in a dramatic race against Republican challenger Roy Moore.

    Bending Toward Justice
is a dramatic and compulsively readable account of a key moment in our long national struggle for equality, related by an author who played a major role in these events. A distinguished work of legal and personal history, the book is destined to take its place as a canonical civil rights history.
