SuperEurope: The Unexpected Hero of the 21st Century
This book is a vindication of Europe. It challenges the view of Europe as a tired, overregulated continent, arguing instead that Europe has emerged from decades of crisis-financial turmoil, Brexit, COVID-19, war in Ukraine-as a resilient, reformed, and quietly successful model of governance and society.
While the world often focuses on the rivalry between the U.S. and China, Europe has steadily built a different path: one defined by high living standards, strong public institutions, universal healthcare, and a commitment to sustainability and human rights. Its cities lead in quality of life, its democracies remain among the most robust, and its cultural and regulatory influence-exemplified by GDPR, climate policy, and social protections-extends globally.
In contrast, the United States, though still dominant in innovation, faces mounting internal challenges: political dysfunction, social fragmentation, inequality, and mistrust in institutions. The dynamism of Silicon Valley and Wall Street has come at the cost of social cohesion and civic faith.
Europe's success is not just relative-it is real. It has shown the ability to balance prosperity with inclusion, and pragmatism with principle. It also engages China on its own terms, defending democratic values while pursuing economic ties.
Yet, Europe suffers from a psychological weakness: a lack of self-confidence. Many Europeans feel peripheral in a fast-changing world. This insecurity fuels populism, EU skepticism, and nostalgic politics. The book counters this with evidence and clarity, reminding readers that Europe remains one of the best places on Earth to live, work, and raise a family.
While acknowledging unresolved issues-defense, migration, competitiveness-it argues that Europe's model is not obsolete, but exemplary. The continent's trajectory is positive. Its best days, the author suggests, may still lie ahead.

Food Justice Undone: Lessons for Building a Better Movement Volume 88
"A piercing ethnographic study of the power dynamics and misunderstandings that plague 'food justice' nonprofits."--Publishers Weekly
Breaks open the privilege and promise of food justice to envision a radical liberatory future.
Food justice activists have worked to increase access to healthy food in low-income communities of color across the United States. Yet despite their best intentions, they often perpetuate food access inequalities and racial stereotypes. Hanna Garth shows how the movement has been affected by misconceptions and assumptions about residents, as well as by unclear definitions of justice and what it means to be healthy. Focusing on broad structures and microlevel processes, Garth reveals how power dynamics shape social justice movements in particular ways. Drawing on twelve years of ethnographic research, Garth examines what motivates people from more affluent, majority-white areas of the city to intervene in South Central Los Angeles. She argues that the concepts of "food justice" and "healthy food" operate as racially coded language, reinforcing the idea that health problems in low-income Black and Brown communities can be solved through individual behavior rather than structural change. Food Justice Undone explores the stakes of social justice and the possibility of multiracial coalitions working toward a better future. -

Spotlight
One night-that's all it was supposed to be. No names. No complications.
And now? He's everywhere.
In every trending video.
In all the news headlines.
On every freaking billboard.
Turns out, he's not just some guy. He's Flynn Holland, Lake City's new hotshot pitcher. The one that's supposed to end our team's fifty-year championship drought.
(The same way I've fantasized about him ending mine).
As if that weren't bad enough, my daughter loves him and he's the poster boy for my rival bookstore.
Flynn's perfect smile is plastered all over town, selling their books, like some kind of traitorous golden boy-while he's over here giving me his best game.
Pass.
I've had enough heartbreak for two lifetimes.
But then he looks at me, and I forget how to breathe.
Not to mention, he's so good with my little girl, it's downright unfair.
He's maddeningly gorgeous, ridiculously persistent, and dragging me straight into his spotlight.

Acts of Love: Black Performance and the Kiss That Changed Film History
"This book doesn't just fill gaps in film history; it demands that we confront why those gaps existed in the first place. A fascinating read for lovers of film."--Ava DuVernay The rediscovery of the first film to depict African American affection revises the history of American cinema. In 1898, vaudeville actors Saint Suttle and Gertie Brown joyously embraced in a short silent film titled Something Good--Negro Kiss. The first known film to portray African American affection, it was lost for over a century until its rediscovery inspired contemporary audiences with a powerful and enduring depiction of Black love. More than a missing piece in an untold history of Black cinematic performance, Something Good--and the magnetism of Suttle and Brown--attests to the power of Black performance on stage and screen from the nineteenth century to today. In Acts of Love, Allyson Nadia Field tells the story of Something Good and recovers the forgotten yet fascinating lives of its performers and their world. Drawing a vivid picture from sparse historical records, Acts of Love examines popular culture's negotiation of blackness to reconsider the intersections of minstrelsy, vaudeville, and cinema in ragtime America. This book not only presents the story of Something Good, its performers, and the drama of its rediscovery; it shows how the rediscovery of this short early film changes our understanding of American film history. -
