Punk: The Last Word
"Expansive, opinionated, and richly detailed, this is an essential capstone for readers serious about punk's past and its enduring provocation" -- Booklist, Starred Review
The triumphant last word on the radical movement that shook the world -- Stephen Colegrave and Chris Sullivan's deliciously cacophonous and comprehensive oral history of Punk, told by those who lived it.
Punk: The Last Word is a powerful reimagining of punk--not just as a sound or style, but as a radical, DIY philosophy rooted in defiance, truth, and individuality. Cultural insider and Wag Club founder Chris Sullivan and Byline Times editor Stephen Colegrave bring together over 150 original interviews with punk's most iconic figures--Iggy Pop, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Siouxsie Sioux, Vivienne Westwood, and many others. From musicians and designers to promoters and provocateurs, they paint a vivid portrait of the movement's chaotic rise and lasting impact on both sides of the Atlantic.
Tracing punk's rebellious spirit from 19th-century bohemia to the explosion of Kings Road and Coventry in the late '70s, this is, without a doubt, the most in-depth, insider account of punk's evolution and legacy.
As the movement approaches its 50th anniversary, its core values--authenticity, resistance, and creative freedom--feel more urgent than ever. Punk isn't just music. It's a way of life.

American Short Story: The Nineteenth Century, Volume 2 (Loa #395)
The second volume in a landmark story collection that redefines what we thought we knew about the great American literary form A diverse, unprecedented gathering of more than one hundred stories, representing work by fifty different writers As much a nineteenth-century American invention as the cotton gin and the steamboat, the short story emerged here with a range of innovation and a variety of styles and subjects that has still not been fully appreciated. Diverse, wide-ranging, and unprecedented in its scope, The American Short Story: The Nineteenth Century gathers more than one hundred stories by fifty different writers. This second volume of The Library of America's two-volume anthology of nineteenth-century American short fiction follows the evolution of American short story from Bret Harte's mid-century tales of the Gold Rush frontier to Alice Dunbar-Nelson's "The Stones of the Village," a story about racial passing written around 1900 but not published in the author's lifetime. Henry James, generously represented in this volume, dominates the second half of the century, though also represeanted here are the accomplishments of the so-called local-color writers associated with the post-Civil War period. The indelible stories of Sarah Orne Jewett and Kate Chopin are justly celebrated examples of this strain, and those writers are represented by several stories, but ample space is also given here to stories by Constance Fenimore Woolson and Mary Wilkins Freeman. The reader will also discover the short fiction of Stephen Crane, in whose work naturalism finds its perfect aesthetic and philosophical expressionas well as the indispensable stories of such Black writers as Charles W. Chesnutt and Paul Laurence Dunbar. The unexpected selection of Thomas Nelson Page's "Marse Chan" provides the context for Chesnutt's groundbreaking explorations of racial identity and his use of African American speech and folklore. Other surprises in this volume include Francis Hopkinson Smith's minor comic masterpiece "Six House in Squantico," about a town left behind in the post-bellum South. Unrivaled in its range and textual authority, the anthology includes biographies of each writer, a chronology of writers and the American short story from 1800 to 1900, and extensive notes. -

When construction at Birch Elementary uncovers a time capsule buried by the school's sixth-grade class in 1900 - the year the school was built! - Mr. Marons's current sixth-grade class is fascinated to discover letters from the students among the artifacts inside. Each of the letters describes the marvels of innovation in the new building in one of four categories - electricity, plumbing, building or transportation. Matter of Pedigree
The author of the popular Lucy Stone mysteries returns with this brand-new series about two newly wealthy Rhode Island empty-nesters. Carole Capobianco has always counted her blessings, but it's even more fun now that she and her husband Frank are finally making serious money, thanks to Frank's newly patented Bye-Bye Toilet. With the kids finally on their own, Carole and Frank are empty-nesters, which will give her uninterrupted time to add to her impressive shoe collection--and lavish care on Poopsie, her beloved, very spoiled Brittany spaniel. The cherry on top is a hefty bid on a luxury co-op in a prestige building . . . But that dream is quickly flushed when the offer is refused by venture capitalist Hosea Brown. Hearing the claim that the Capobiancos won't fit into their wealthy, snooty community, Frank is outraged enough to roar something about killing that "old Yankee" on his way out the door. The next morning, Carole is shocked by the news that Hosea has been bludgeoned to death. When Carole learns Hosea was one of the backers of a big new construction project for which Frank's company has also been contracted, she's worried. And that worry grows with every new twist in the case that's discovered. Armed with her favorite Jimmy Choos and her beloved, if quirky, Poopsie, Carole sets out to clear Frank's name--and just maybe save their lives . . . -
