Lincoln in New England: In Search of His Forgotten Tours
"Combining history, travelogue, and memoir, Kent's engagingly written account is sure to find a receptive audience among Lincoln scholars and enthusiasts alike." -John C. Rodrigue, PhD, author of Freedom's Crescent, finalist for the 2024 Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize and recipient of the John L. Nau III Prize in Civil War Studies
Lincoln in New England revisits the important towns where Lincoln spoke and the pivotal figures that helped define the great issues leading to the Civil War. Readers join native New Englander and Lincoln historian David J. Kent as he travels back in time to examine the nation's downward spiral into conflict.
Readers will explore the crucial issues that predicated the civil war, the birth of the Republican Party as an anti-slavery faction, and New England's own short-lived flirtation with secession in the spirit of independence. Through the book's first-person travelogue style, historical maps with redrawn routes, original writings from Lincoln himself, insight from Lincoln historians, and black and white photographs, readers gain a full picture of the region's vital influence leading up to the Civil War.

Hike Strong: The Complete Guide to Building Mountain Strength, Endurance, and Confidence for Hiking and Backpacking
Hiking and backpacking are unique "sports" which require a unique blend of strength, conditioning, and athleticism unlike most recreational physical endeavors. People need strength to climb steep ascents, conditioning to endure long mile days, and athleticism to handle their own body on rugged terrain. Now add on the harsh, rugged conditions of the mountains and it can be a recipe for struggle - but it doesn't have to be. Hike Strong: The Complete Guide to Building Trail Strength, Endurance, and Confidence for Hiking and Backpacking will help alleviate the "fitness anxiety" that some can experience when thinking about tackling the mountain they've always wanted to climb. Written by a licensed hiking guide and professional strength and conditioning coach, this book will be a transformative fitness guide designed for outdoor enthusiasts who want to confidently enjoy the trail. This guide will offer a practical, step-by-step approach to preparing readers both physically and mentally so they can arrive at any trailhead fully confident in their abilities. The tools and programming they'll learn will help them feel strong and perform well from trailhead to summit and back again. In Hike Strong, readers will find training programs that combine strength-building, conditioning, balance, and mobility tailored specifically to the demands of hiking and backpacking. They'll also learn the "why" and "how" behind these programs. Conventional wisdom has told people to "just go running" to get in shape for hiking. This guide takes a vastly different approach and instead teaches that strength training is the way to properly prepare oneself for the demands of the backcountry. The author's training modalities have been proven over and over by the successful results his clients have experienced in the mountains following his training program. This book will inspire readers to be excited to embark on new adventures, knowing they have the tools to make every step of the adventure a rewarding one.

Activist: A Daoist Protest Manual
The reason why protests have caused maximum pain for minimum gain is that they have done everything right. Well-developed consensus practices from activists have been put into practice in highly coordinated fashion internationally: keep messaging simple, restrict communications to a few media-trained representatives, maximize social media spread, try to provoke reactions, do not compromise, and do not legitimize the opposition by speaking to them. As a result, most observers not already sympathetic to the cause have come away with a picture of students as obstinate, naïve, and inclined to violence.
Daoist philosophy holds a set of principles that are completely opposite to the normal modes of social activism. It opposes conflict, striving, standard-setting, clever techniques, and any kind of trust in language. Instead, it promotes grounding oneself in the reality of the world, looking to flow in natural directions, disengagement from conflict, and patience. This may all sound very mystical and not of much use to protests; but viewed in another light, it results in some common-sense conclusions. Would you be more easily persuaded by someone who sat down with you for a conversation, or by someone who yelled angry accusations at you from across a barricade?
The Activist tries to bring out the "common-sense" aspect of Daoist ideals to advocate for a new kind of social activism. It critiques common modes of social and political activism and proposes new modes of activism that might be more effective in promoting positive change in the world.

From urban patios to rural homesteads, learn to cultivate versatile flowers that beautify your space while doubling as culinary herbs, healing plants, and craft materials. Flower farming has seen a recent surge of interest, largely due to social media and the presence of idolized flower farmers, such as Washington State's Floret. Joanna Blessing of Olde Soul Acres invites readers to dive deeper into intentionally growing cut flowers and enjoying the fruits of their labor. Rolling Back the River
"Rolling Back the River is a lyrical and unflinching journey through wild streams, wild hearts, and the wilderness of loss. With humor, heart, and hard-earned wisdom, Paul Guernsey reminds us that the rivers we love-and the lives we build-can never flow backward." -Joshua Caldwell, fly fisher, director of the feature film Mending the Line
While fly-fishing on a remote river in southern Argentina, a veteran outdoor writer from Maine finds himself swept into a cascade of bizarre events, all connected to an enigmatic, billionaire environmentalist and his cosmopolitan twin nieces.
Vincent Mapp, former adventure-traveling editor-in-chief for an international fly-fishing magazine, now leads a life centered around teaching at a small Maine environmental college and obsessively fishing his home waters for just about anything that swims. But after his wife of many years abruptly upends his world by ditching him for someone who doesn't fish all the time, Vincent decides to accept one last far-flung assignment as a fly-fishing journalist, and he heads off to Patagonia with the goal of catching some of the few remaining, fast disappearing, Argentinian landlocked salmon-all of which are descended from fish originally introduced to Argentina from Maine. Even at the literal end of the earth, however, and exploring an enchanted landscape of devastating beauty, Vincent finds himself unable to avoid conflict. He arrives at an isolated ranch on the Perca River just as a mysterious predator has begun attacking pets and livestock-and it's not long before he experiences his own terrifying nighttime run-in with the creature. He also discovers that the reclusive American owner of an adjacent ranch-multi-billionaire wildlife conservationist and avid fly-angler J.T. Allman-has been commissioning some unsettling environmental experiments on his vast property. One serious complication in Vincent's attempts to get to the bottom of all the strangeness: Allman holds a simmering 20-year-old grudge against him for events connected to his time as a magazine editor. Turbulent waters become increasing treacherous after Allman's cultured, equestrian, and attractive twin nieces, unaware of their elderly uncle's animosity toward Vincent, invite him to a bizarre festival on the grounds of the Allman estate. Through it all, Vincent and his faithful fishing guide, Sancho Nelson, try very hard to catch some salmon.

Georgetown's Retail Past: Generations of Shops and Restaurants in One of America's Great Historic Neighborhoods
Step back in time and rediscover the bars and restaurants, mom-and-pop shops, and bustling storefronts that shaped historic Georgetown.
Georgetown's Retail Past is a history of retail stores in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC, over the decades when the original eighteenth-century tobacco port became a working class neighborhood, later a restored historic enclave, and in the 1980s a retail destination. The history illuminates trends that changed retailing, including the transition from horse-drawn to automobile transportation, the advent and growth of home appliances, the decline of the barbershop, and the evolution of the grocery and laundry businesses.

Many of the neighborhood stores were started by immigrants, and some immigrant families owned multiple stores over multiple generations; their entrepreneurial spirit is apparent throughout.
