Death of Us by Abigail Dean
What better way to ring in a new year than with a new book club pick, and there's something very special about my latest selection: it also happens to be my FAVORITE book of 2025. That's right, our January Jordy's Book Club pick is Abigail Dean's THE DEATH OF US.
If you’ve read an Abigail Dean book before, then you know she goes to some very dark places. Her 2021 debut, GIRL A, was about a woman dealing with the past trauma associated with being held captive in her childhood home by her own parents; and 2023’s DAY ONE was centered around the tragedy of a school shooting and how conspiracy theories take hold in a small town community.
In THE DEATH OF US, Dean explores the rise and fall of a marriage against the backdrop of a home invasion and violent assault. The book is told from two alternating perspectives: in one, Isabel recounts how she met and fell in love with her husband Edward, the story of their epic romance, the small hairline cracks that began forming in their relationship, and how one night a notorious serial killer came into their home and shattered it all; in the other perspective, Edward reconnects with Isabel 20+ years later (they’re now divorced) when their attacker has finally been apprehended and they are asked to give victim impact statements at his sentencing. The juxtaposition of these alternating perspectives allows Dean to build characters and relationships as well as tension, as she drops a terrifying trail of breadcrumbs alluding to what actually happened on the night in question, and the resulting devastation and fallout that come with it. The book doesn’t shy away from violence and terror, but it’s handled thoughtfully, almost an energy that slowly bleeds into the story of Isabel and Edward...and then all at once.
THE DEATH OF US is an astonishing work of fiction, a stunning and complex relationship drama, a gripping novel of suspense, and it is a book that every time I set it down, I found myself immediately picking it back up. I am thrilled to be reading it with all of you this month and hope you'll join us!

Each club’s upcoming title is announced on the 15th of the prior month. You can preview the pick and, if it’s not your vibe, simply hold your tokens (for up to a year) to use on another title or item instead.

Yep! You can cancel anytime after your first renewal. No hoops, no heartbreak.
