Emily Brontë was born on July 30, 1818, in Thornton, Yorkshire. She worked briefly as a governess and studied in Brussels before returning to England to manage the family household, beginning in 1843. In addition to her only successful novel, she published a book of poetry with her sisters Charlotte and Anne. All three used male pseudonyms due to the prejudice against female writers at the time. Two years after her death, her sister Charlotte revealed Emily's true identity in the biographical sketch accompanying the second edition of Wuthering Heights, causing a major stir in the British literary world and among the general public.
