La peor tragedia del idílico vecindario de Hemlock Circle ocurrió en la residencia de Ethan Marsh. Una noche de julio, cuando tenían diez años, Ethan y su mejor amigo Billy pasaron la noche en una tienda de campaña en el jardín. A la mañana siguiente, Ethan despertó solo. Alguien había rasgado la tienda con un cuchillo y se había llevado a Billy durante la noche. Desde entonces no se volvió a saber de él.

Treinta años después, Ethan regresa a la casa de su infancia. Atormentado por pesadillas e insomnio, empieza a notar cosas extrañas en mitad de la noche. The worst tragedy in the idyllic neighborhood of Hemlock Circle happened at Ethan Marsh's home. One July night, when they were ten, Ethan and his best friend Billy slept in a tent in the backyard. The next morning Ethan woke up alone. Someone had slashed the tent with a knife and taken Billy during the night. He was never seen again.

Thirty years later, Ethan returns to his childhood house. Tormented by nightmares and insomnia, he starts noticing strange things in the middle of the night. Someone seems to be prowling the neighborhood at odd hours and, most disturbingly, signs of Billy's presence begin to appear. Is it a cruel prank? Or is Billy, whom everyone believed dead, back in some way?

Desperate, Ethan begins a search that reunites him with old friends and leads him into the woods surrounding Hemlock Circle. Woods where Billy claimed to have seen ghosts and where a sinister institute conducts clandestine research. Thus, little by little he will discover that the past never disappears and always finds a way to reach us.
