Description

Rachel Hartman's Seraphina meets The Priory of the Orange Tree in Lady Dragon, a sapphic YA romantasy from A.M. Strickland.

The age of queens is over...unless they can save it.

Since the last war between humans and dragons left the leaders of both species slain - the last human king of Andrath and the legendary dragon queen - both queendoms have been living under a tentative truce: only women will sit on the throne of Andrath, the dragons will have free passage through the human lands...and if men ever try to retake the throne, the draconic realm will retaliate.

Samansa and Kirek are two new leaders coming of age in war-scarred lands - Samansa a reluctant human princess and Kirek the favored contender for the draconic queenship. Per tradition, Kirek must undergo the distasteful task of using a mysterious gem called the Heartstone to shift into human form and maintain the strained ties between the species . . . and study human weaknesses, a new and secret task she's been given by her queen. As the princess and the dragon girl grow closer, they are sent to investigate a potential breach of the treaty and encounter a plot that could reignite an even bloodier war. While fighting to maintain the peace their ancestors fought for and uncovering centuries-old secrets, Samansa and Kirek must grapple with betraying their clashing nations . . . or their unexpected feelings for each other.

About the Author

A.M. Strickland was a bibliophile who wanted to be an author before she knew what either of those words meant. She splits her time between Alaska and Spain with her spouse, her pugs, and her piles of books. She loves traveling, dancing, tattoos, and writing stories about sympathetic monsters. Her books include Beyond the Black Door, In the Ravenous Dark, and Court of the Undying Seasons. She uses both she/her and they/them pronouns.

Critical Reviews

Praise for Lady Dragon:

"A compelling, satisfying medievalist political fantasy and sweet queer romance . . . thoughtful and fun." --BCCB

"An alliance between humans and dragons transforms into something far more powerful in this sweeping tale of succession, flush with embittered families, forgotten history, and the eternal flame of true love. Tense and gripping, with breathtaking battles and nail-biting twists, Lady Dragon is a fiery, romantic tale that burns with rage and heals with heart." --Adrienne Tooley, author of Sweet & Bitter Magic and The Third Daughter

"A delightful adventure where a sunshiney princess is forced into a reluctant alliance with a grumpy dragon,
Lady Dragon is also a deeply important, timely examination of gender and autonomy." --Lyndall Clipstone, author of Lakesedge and Tenderly, I am Devoured

"Fiercely feminist and wholly enthralling,
Lady Dragon is a tale of courage, longing and duty. The world is richly imagined, the relationship between humans and dragons compelling and unique. Above all, however, this is a story of how love both softens and emboldens. I truly loved it." --M.K. Lobb, author of Seven Faceless Saints and To Steal From Thieves

"Dramatic and well-wrought,
with strong crossover appeal for adult readers." --Kirkus

Praise for Court of the Undying Seasons:

★"Pays homage to classics and plays with boarding school and murder-mystery tropes in an original, inventive way. Fin's own journey into power along with the medieval-esque setting, heart-stirring romance, well-rounded secondary characters, and found family make it a delectable read indeed . . . Abso-bloody-lutely brilliant. " --Kirkus, starred review

"With brutal romance, vicious stakes, and a twisty mystery, Court of The Undying Seasons takes everything we love about vampires and cranks it to a whole new level." --Hannah Whitten, author of For the Wolf and For the Throne

"Alluring . . . Witty dialogue and arch antagonism keep the character dynamics breezy, while high-stakes action and fraught romance imbue the narrative with urgent pacing. Strickland further employs complex mythology and a bombshell-laden plot to interrogate issues of choice, consent, and identity." --Publishers Weekly
