Brazzaville Beach
"Utterly engaging....A novel of ideas, of big themes....William Boyd is a champion storyteller." - New York Times Book Review
William Boyd's classic Brazzaville Beach has been called as a "bold seamless blend of philosophy and suspense... [that] nevertheless remains accessible to general readers on a level of pure entertainment." (Boston Globe). Released to coincide with Boyd's latest novel, Ordinary Thunderstorms, Brazzaville Beach tells the story of a British primate-researcher who relocates to war-torn Africa in the wake of her husband's tragic descent into mental illness. Intense, exhilarating, and engrossing, Brazzaville Beach is "rich in action and thought," and William Boyd "a writer who allows the scope of his work to expand to the point of bursting." Breach: Iran-Contra and the Assault on American Democracy
A president defying Congress. Disrespect for the law. Attacks on the press. Evasion in the courts. The privatization of war. Quid pro quos with foreign nations. The mounting dangers to American democracy have long been with us. But all these perils first emerged together during the Iran-Contra scandal of the Reagan-Bush era. This opaque foreign policy mess has receded from history, a minor speedbump at the triumphant end of the Cold War. With American democracy in increasing jeopardy from the inside, however, Iran-Contra must be reassessed as a major step down that dark path.
In this gripping blow-by-blow account of the 1980s efforts to trade arms with Iran illegally, fund rebels in Central America despite a congressional prohibition, and dodge political and legal consequences once the truth emerged, Alan McPherson argues for the salience of six democracy-degrading behaviors throughout the fiasco. At the time, many warned of the broad attack on democratic norms, yet no one paid a real price or learned a lesson. Those failures left the country more divided than ever before, and ill-equipped for more severe assaults to come. -
Bread and Circus
"Discerning and significant." --Poetry Foundation
"A sharp memoir in verse." --LitHub This powerful and timely collection of autobiographical poems from Yale Young Poets Award Winner and Philadelphia's former Poet Laureate Airea D. Matthews about the economics of class is a brilliant intellectual and artistic contribution to the ongoing conversation about American inequality. As a former student of economics, Airea D. Matthews was fascinated and disturbed by 18th-century Scottish economist Adam Smith's magnum opus The Wealth of Nations. Now, she presents a direct challenge to Smith's theory of the invisible hand, which claims self-interest is the key to optimal economic outcomes. By juxtaposing redacted texts by Smith and the French Marxist Guy Debord with autobiographical prose and poems, Bread and Circus personally offers how self-interest fails when it reduces people to commodity and spectacle. A layered collection to be read and reread, with poems that range from tragic to humorous, in forms as varied and nuanced as the ideas the book considers, Bread and Circus asks what it is to have survived, indeed to have flourished, and at what cost. "Full of humane wisdom, this powerful volume forces readers to acknowledge systemic inequity" (Publishers Weekly, starred review) and is ideal for fans of Elizabeth Alexander, Natalie Diaz, Eve Ewing, and Gregory Pardlo. -

Bread and Milk
From one of Sweden's most loved authors, an essayistic memoir about women and food, translated by Saskia Vogel.
Bread and Milk traces a life through food, from a bag of tangerines devoured in one sitting to the luxury of a grandmother's rice pudding, from pancakes meant to make up for a mother's absence to perfectly sliced tomatoes winning, at last, a distant father's approval; it explores how food can fill an emptiness but also consume you. After all, what we eat is inexorably intertwined with how we love.
In this radiant memoir, one of Sweden's most acclaimed writers considers the complex relationships between the women in her family as they struggle with financial and emotional vulnerability, and how those relationships replicate themselves in fraught and obsessive relationships with food. Bread and Milk is at once wholly original and a natural extension of the brazenly intelligent and personal writing that has come to define Karolina Ramqvist's authorship.
'If Annie Ernaux and Marcel Proust had a love child it would be Bread and Milk by Karolina Ramqvist.' - Laurel Kane, White Whale Bookstore
'Karolina Ramqvist's writing is straight-talking scripture, a spiritual text in memoir form. Food isn't just love or its opposite; food marks time for the mortal body. Food is how people remember the people who no longer exist to make and eat food. Ramqvist's mind is transgressively pragmatic, and a constant source of enlightenment. Instead of saying, 'Look at what you didn't know," her book says, "Look at what you thought you didn't know, but always did.' - Heidi Julavits, author of Directions to Myself
'Swedish novelist Ramqvist's highly relatable memoir details the problems that can arise when a child associates food with love...The term "food memoir" doesn't quite encompass her profound autobiographical journey...her story, with its lush and evocative prose, will speak to many readers.' - Booklist

Bread Givers
First published in 1925, Anzia Yezierska's "Bread Givers" is the tale of a young Jewish-American immigrant woman and her struggle to control her own destiny in Manhattan's Lower East Side at the turn of the century. The novel is based in large part on Yezierska's own life experiences immigrating from Poland as a child and growing up in New York City in an Orthodox Jewish family. "Bread Givers" centers on the story of its main character, Sara Smolinsky, who lives with her older sisters and parents in a poor tenement in the Lower East Side. The Smolinsky family is destitute and struggles to make ends meet as the father, Reb, refuses to work and spends all his time studying the Torah and clinging to the traditions of the country he left behind. He arranges unhappy marriages for his older daughters in the hope of becoming rich himself. Sara vows to avoid her sisters' fates and takes her life into her own hands, pursuing an education and refusing to marry just because it is expected of her. "Bread Givers" is both an engaging portrait of New York at the beginning of the twentieth-century and a timeless tale of a young woman's journey of self-discovery and determination. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.
