Description

All's fair in love, art-and murder.

It's the spring of 1939, and the New York World's Fair is nearly ready to open. Its visionary theme, "Building the World of Tomorrow," promises a peaceful and prosperous future. But that bright prospect is darkened by war clouds gathering over Europe and the rise of the German-American Bund. Against this backdrop, NYPD officer Brian F.X. Fitzgerald investigates a series of mishaps involving mural painters working at the Fair. He suspects sabotage, and when one of them is killed, he's sure it wasn't an accident. Guided by a beautiful artist who becomes his lover, Fitz digs deep into the art world's rivalries to solve the mystery of the murdered muralist.

Critical Reviews

"Helen A. Harrison's impeccable art historical knowledge of the 1939 NY World's Fair makes certain the World of Tomorrow comes alive with murder today."

- Steven Heller, co-author of Trylon and Perisphere

"With all the intrigue of a classic mystery novel, Harrison uses the 1939 New York World's Fair to thread together the lives and legacies of some of the era's most colorful figures. With a cast of characters stretching from Salvador Dalí to Stuart Davis, this whimsical thriller draws on the author's encyclopedic knowledge of the fairgrounds to keep readers guessing around every corner and prompt some reflection on the role of public art at a moment of profound geopolitical turmoil. An impressive work of historical fiction, the story serves as a whistle-stop tour of both the exposition itself and the multicultural metropolis that is New York City." - James Fortuna, Institute for the Study of International Expositions
