Critical Reviews

A delightful collection of stories for fans of supernatural and otherworldly tales- ghostly, eerie, unexplainable, and a few even funny. I often felt like the person was talking to me, telling me the tale as if I were sitting with them.

--Mary Hamilton, storyteller and author of Kentucky Folktales: Revealing Stories, Truths, and Outright Lies

Chilling and inexplicable supernatural stories that entertain and deliver rich details of everyday life in a region of Appalachia.

--Mark Brown, director of folk and traditional arts at the Kentucky Arts Council

Haint Country. . . represents an attempt from creators who are from Appalachia, steeped in its storytelling, to get it right. Rather than treat Appalachia as a monolith, Sparks and Sizemore focus on the lore of very specific counties in Eastern Kentucky, and they use first-person voices--those of the storytellers they actually spoke with--to relay the tales. This is important, they say, because there is no 'one' version of Appalachia or Appalachians. Stories, therefore, need to be rooted in place and history to be their most effective--and even frightening--selves.
