Description

Ice to Water is a raw portrayal of survival, loss and love, and the hidden complexities experienced by those whose lives are profoundly transformed by climatic changes.

"M Jackson is a linguistic sorcerer, making you fall in love by proxy with the geological memory-keepers."Foreword Reviews nonfiction review of The Secret Life of Glaciers

On the verge of losing everything, Ruth Harper, recently widowed and struggling with alcoholism, meets a mysterious man named Silas who helps her discover a rare ice cave on her property in Burnt Bay, Alaska. When images of the ice go viral on social media, tourists arrive at the farm gate clamoring to see the ice cave before it melts. As Ruth's relationship with Silas deepens and dark secrets surrounding her husband's death begin to surface, she must choose to take an unprecedented gamble and harness her life to a glacier whose future is just as uncertain as her own. Ice to Water is both a celebration of resilience against persistent loss and a reminder that to find ourselves, we must face terrifying truths.

Critical Reviews

"Jackson weaves a tale that is both haunting and irresistible, an ode to ice and a celebration of what makes us lovably, yet fallibly human. Strap on your crampons and get ready for an unforgettable read!"
--CAROLINE VAN HEMERT, The Sun is a Compass

"Heartbreaking and hopeful, this shows how the landscapes we love shape us, how we shape them back, and how they can bind communities together."
--KEEMA WATERFIELD, Inside Passage

"This novel is like a cold shower of glacier water, brimming with icy but hopeful clarity. Science and story flow together beautifully. Jackson's gripping prose will freeze and thaw you in turns, and show you humanity reflected in the ice."
--EMILY POOLE, Tsunami Books

"An edgy, exciting story written by an expert observer of glaciers. Jackson's confident, fast-paced writing hooked me from page one until revelations at the end were like cracking ice."
--KATHRYN AALTO, Writing Wild

"In this gripping story of a hard-edged protagonist finding her way in a changing world, Jackson brings readers from the Alaskan wilderness to the belly of a glacier to explore how deeply dependent we are on the landscapes we inhabit. Ice to Water is vivid, entertaining, and chilly to the bone."
--EMMA LOEWE, Return to Nature

"Through vivid storytelling, Jackson expertly weaves her own vast knowledge of glaciers into a thought-provoking story of love and loss while calling attention to the individual roles we all play in not only our own future but the future of the planet."
