Description

Letters to Home: Art and Writing by LGBTQ+ Nikkei and Allies asks what it means to welcome others and to be welcomed home. Bringing together art, poetry, and story-telling from nearly 50 contributors across the US and Japan, this wide-ranging volume offers a nuanced exploration of the trials and triumphs of finding community, and the process of co-constructing a sense of belonging for all queer Nikkei. This project was the vision of Okaeri, a Los Angeles-based organization dedicated to creating visibility, compassionate spaces, and transformation for LGBTQ+ Nikkei and their families.

Critical Reviews

"Okaeri has been an important resource and support for many LGBTQ+ Japanese Americans, including me. This book is a great reflection of this community and its ever growing pride. Letters to Home will provide a unique sense of belonging wherever you are. Please read it and feel the warmth and welcome of coming home."

- George Takei

"Provocative, ground-breaking and all-inclusive, even in its offerings in the Japanese language-Letters to Home breaks any preconceived notions the public and Japanese Americans have about the current status of the Nikkei LGBTQ+ community. Congratulations go to the editors for crafting a gorgeous and well-considered publication that honors the spirit of Okaeri."

- Naomi Hirahara

"Okaeri's literary gathering Letters to Home continues its tradition of bringing us in and lifting up the Nikkei LGBTQ+ diaspora, through an expansive and gorgeous collection of poetry, art, essay and photography. Every piece is a proclamation, each voice a profound expression-showing the wild diversity of our experiences while allowing us to find in each other, and this anthology, a collective mirror and a chosen home."

- traci kato-kiriyama

"It's such an honor to journey together with Okaeri on this path for peace, compassion, love, kindness, and dignity for our children and all living things! Your book, Letters to Home, captures so much of what I hope for our world. Please keep up your great work...."
